Ottawa High School Freshmen Cheerleaders Win Camp Honors

Ottawa High School freshmen cheerleaders earned spirit sticks and high marks at the state Universal Cheerleading Camp. The squad received a trophy for superior overall improvement, while both varsity and freshman squads earned ribbons for superior performance and excellent performance. Travis Caryl was a jump off finalist and was later chosen for a Camp All Star squad with Katie Stewart and Season Riley trying out. Caryl was also selected for a special squad to perform in London.

Purple Heart Bridge honors wounded U S military heroes

The Arkansas River bridge in Derby was dedicated as the Purple Heart Bridge with a ceremony honoring about 20 Purple Heart recipients including Dale Gregory, a WWII paratrooper, and Ramon Reyes who fainted during the heat. Relatives cheered as veterans crossed the bridge while service anthems played and a Sedgwick County official explained the symbol’s history.

Teen Driver cited after backing into parked car

Thirteen-year-old Michael A. Espinosa of West 7th was cited Saturday evening after he allegedly backed into a legally parked vehicle owned by Pascual Aguilar of Topeka on West 2nd. He and passenger Jade Hernandez were belted and uninjured. Espinosa was arrested for driving without a valid license and given a court notice.

Medical center sale aids global relief effort drive

McPherson Medical Center will be sold with proceeds donated to MAP International, a nonprofit medical relief ministry. Dr. Tom Billings and Nancy plan to support AIDS prevention, vaccines, and essential medicines for developing countries, citing missions work in Congo in 1969 70 and 1985 95. Remaining debt of 450000 will be paid from the sale.

Firefighter Training in Wellsville Trains Lift and Carry Ladder

Karen Leroy of Cutler Township Fire Department wore turn-out gear and learned to lift and carry a ladder from Kansas State Firefighters' Association instructor Lawrence Ruff at a Saturday Franklin County Firefighters Training session in Wellsville. Attendees included firefighters from Franklin Jefferson Osage and Miami counties.

School board eyes promotions and hires for next year

The board will consider promoting the vice president role, ratifying the district teachers and staff agreement with new salaries, and approving hires Renee Antonio as vocal music teacher and Chris Reynolds as band instructor plus a technology support post. A demolition hearing for the former middle school may be discussed pending State Historical Society ruling.

Shawnee officers cleared in theft case over lockers

Topeka AP report says Judge Thomas Conklin dismissed charges against Undersheriff William Huffmier and former deputy Dave Reser, ruling the lockers were abandoned by the county as scrap when taken from Forbes Field property room in June 1999. Prosecutors failed to prove ownership and Reser had permission, negating theft intent.

Police reports list multiple arrests for theft burglary battery and firearms offenses with various bonds and court appearances.
