Garnett board selects posts and reviews high school progress
Garnett school board elected new officers with Donna McCarty as president and Dale Kueser as vice president. Kenneth Woods reported the high school construction is on schedule and near completion, with classes set to start in August. The board declined a property transfer request to Burlington district, citing border requirements. New appointments include Carol Wittman as board clerk and Sue Hardman as treasurer. Prison riot ends at Leavenworth after inmate dies
One prisoner died from stab wounds and three others were wounded during a riot at Leavenworth Prison. Winford Brown, 23, of Mulberry Grove, Illinois, was identified as the deceased. About 100 guards used riot batons and tear gas to regain control as roughly 300 inmates occupied the auditorium, dining area, and recreation yard for about three hours.

Dignitary narrowly escapes car bombing in Iraq
