Afghan leader urges US to join peacekeepers

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said he would welcome US participation in a multinational peacekeeping force and urged expanding security forces beyond Kabul. The White House reiterated that US troops will not join the mission, citing a policy against wide peacekeeping deployment. Karzai told NBC that Afghans want ISF presence across the country and would ask for US involvement if needed.

Afghan forces storm Kandahar hospital to kill al Qaida fighters

Afghan troops and U S special forces storm Mir Wais Hospital in Kandahar using grenades and automatic fire. Six Arab al Qaida fighters holed up in a second floor ward were killed with no American or Afghan casualties reported. Maj Chris, a U S soldier, called the battle a hard gunfight as the operation ended the two month standoff. Karzai pressed plans for expanded force deployment during his Washington visit ahead of the State of the Union address.
