Students say study abroad programs changed everything

Ottawa University junior Jake McMillian recalls life changing moments during a summer abroad in Indonesia working with a nonprofit and students. He also earned the Jerry Campbell Cross Cultural Scholarship and prior trips included Scotland, where archaeology and literature studies complemented the journey. McMillian calls Indonesia a starkly different yet transformative experience. Dana Peterson, a junior at Ottawa High School, also studied abroad in Ecuador last August.

Juvenile Detention Center Sees Fewer Inmates, Longer Stays

Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center reported 133 detainees in 2010 with fewer youths overall but more bed days. Director Ethel Wallace presented the fourth quarter and year end findings to county commissioners, noting stays vary by offense and year 2009 figures were similar.

Bea Martin Peck property transferred to Prairie Paws Shelter

Franklin County commissioners unanimously approved transferring the former Bea Martin Peck animal shelter site to Prairie Paws Animal Shelter. The shelter plans to sell the land to the Franklin County Fair Board, with proceeds funding debt service on the new shelter facility on K-68.
