Piper defeated Wellsville 49 46 in first round action of the Eudora Invitational as the Pirates improved to 7 4. Wellsville led 4 2 with 2 1/2 minutes left but turnovers and missed shots allowed Piper to pull ahead, Randy Childs scoring 10 in the final stretch. Newhouse and Childs led Wellsville with 14 each, Frost led Piper with 12. Wellsville shot 41.6 percent, Piper 44.4 percent, rebounding 29 19. The Eagles return to play Jefferson North at 6 p m.

Lyndon drops a 63-59 boys basketball decision to Osage City after key fouls sidelined Ben Asbury and Shane Pierson late. Lyndon led 46-41 entering the final period but four players fouled out or were disqualified, leaving five guards to defend and rebound. Coach Nick Dawson noted the impact as Lyndon players posted balanced scoring led by Asbury 16 and Pierson 10. Osage City got 17 from Wright and 16 from Williamson as they toed the line 25 of 51 from the field. Lyndon next hosts Wellsville Tuesday.

Canton AP Five players join the Pro Football Hall of Fame including running back OJ Simpson the first former Heisman winner to enter the Hall and quarterback Roger Staubach among the enshrinees also named were NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle quarterback Joe Namath and lineman Frank Gatski. Simpson raced for 2,008 yards in 1973 for the Bills and 11,236 rushing yards in 11 seasons. Staubach Cowboys great and Navy Heisman winner praised the honor. Rozelle noted for pivotal league milestones and Namath famed Super Bowl victory prediction. Gatski longtime Browns lineman anchored the line and played for Marshall Auburn and Cleveland.
