Gas leak from salt cavern storage near Hutchinson triggers geysers

Gas leaks erupting from old brine wells seven miles northwest of Hutchinson have caused two explosions, killing one person and injuring another, with two downtown businesses destroyed. Kansas Gas Service and Mid Continent Marketing Center, both Onco Inc. subsidiaries, operate the Yaggy storage facility storing up to 6.2 billion cubic feet in salt rock caverns 500 to 600 feet underground. Deep cavern leaks reduce pressure, and officials note the gas matches the composition of gas stored at Yaggy. The facility cavern holds about 60 million cubic feet, enough to heat about 2,000 homes for one month. The impact on Kansas gas prices remains undetermined.
