President elect George W. Bush urged a fresh start as the four day inaugural festival opened on Thursday night at the Lincoln Memorial. Celebrities performed for thousands including Ricky Martin Wayne Newton and Brooks & Dunn while Laura Bush and Dick Cheney watched proudly amid a pageant of music, ceremonies, and military flyovers.
Only two candidates filed for three at large council seats in Wellsville as of this morning. Incumbents Bill Kyle Jeff McAfee and Dorsey Edwards hold the open seats with Edwards seeking re election. Robert Thomas and Edwards expressed intentions to push basic infrastructure and city school communications ahead. Kyle had not filed for re election and no candidate yet for one seat. Mayor Kirk Lauritsen filed for re election in Pomona where one candidate has filed for two open council seats.
The House Utilities Committee endorsed a broadband education plan for Kansas schools libraries and hospitals advancing to the House. The proposal HB 2035 envisions private sector delivery with state coordination costs starting around 4.5 million for startup and 13 million annually for maintenance. Plans include information gathering by the Kan-Ed board and a study funded by 500,000 from Gov. Graves. Local lawmakers weigh equity and rural access against districts skeptical of value.
