A Chicago based study of nearly 80 000 women links regular fish consumption to a substantial drop in ischemic stroke risk. Eating about 4 ounces two to four times weekly reduced the risk by 48 percent, with further reductions seen at higher frequencies. Omega 3 fatty acids in fish likely drive the effect by lowering clotting related blood fats. Dark oily fishes such as mackerel salmon and sardines are high in these fats.
