Fire displaces local family after kitchen light fault

Tuesday morning a faulty overhead kitchen light likely caused a fire at 431 S. Poplar, displacing the Michael and Jerri Ecord family. Firefighters limited damage to the kitchen with light smoke throughout the home. damage estimated at 2000 dollars. Red Cross provided hotel housing while an electrician addressed the scene. The family includes five children at home and two at school.

Richmond blaze destroys rural mobile home in Anderson County

An unattended pot on a stove may have caused a fire that destroyed a double wide mobile home on Scipio Road, about 1 1/2 miles west of US-59. Brent Schneider suffered smoke inhalation and a damage estimate is expected to exceed $10,000. His family had insurance, and the fire started as the occupant went to shower.

Teamed Teaching at OMS Sustains 40-Year Practice

OMS Ottawa Middle School has used team teaching since 1975. Despite moving to temporary classrooms at Ottawa High School two years ago, the program remains effective with four core teachers per grade and a ten-member electives team. The Ottawa Board of Education heard praises from Principal Dale Fox and teachers about improved communication with students and parents. The board also plans a symposium with administrators counselors and local HR reps to discuss workplace prep for students not pursuing college.

Landfill plan eyed for Lake Region counties

Franklin County reorganizes as Ogle named chairman

Franklin County Commission elects Bill Ogle as chairman in a vote that saw Weigand block other nominations. The commission also retains The Ottawa Times for legal notices and approves 1600 seedling trees from the National Tree Trust to be planted at the old landfill site, with planting to begin in April.
