Hens wear specs at Alva Filburn egg farm in Kansas
Lois Smith reports on Alva Filburn and his son Darrell running a 40 by 306 foot egg factory near Harris. They use red plastic blinders on hens to curb cannibalism, a top quality laying stock, automated feeding and watering, littered floors, and an extensive sanitation program. Egg production rises then stabilizes with age, aided by extended lighting and an automatic egg gatherer. The operation includes a swine project and two other sons.
