Highways Plan Drawn By Presidential Commission
A five man advisory panel led by Gen Lucius D Clay proposes a 101 billion highway program over ten years. It favors 54 billion in federal aid and 47 billion state costs, with federal cover for most of 24 billion needed to upgrade the 40 000 mile strategic Interstate network. Debates on financing remain unsettled as Eisenhower prepares to send the plan to Congress. The report hints bipartisan interest as national defense and economic stimulus justify major highway development. The commission released only a rough outline through executive director Frank Turner. The plan aligns with Eisenhower’s grand plan and signals substantial federal funding while leaving some funding questions to be resolved. James Bay area noted elsewhere as a brackish extension due to river inflows.
