Clinton seeks tripling of after school offerings

President Clinton proposes raising the after school budget to 600 million dollars and links the funding to opposing social promotion. He, Hillary Clinton, and Al Gore announced the plan in an East Room ceremony as part of the buildup to the January State of the Union and the fiscal 2000 budget. The plan would triple the current 200 million in federal funds for educational and recreational programs for children of working parents. The administration cites 28 million children in two-parent or single-parent working families and notes over 5 million are left home alone after school. Bruce Reed called the program highly popular with Republicans who control appropriations.
