The Kansas Army National Guard armory at 208 W. 17th hosts a noon Saturday to noon Sunday open house. Visitors can see new high tech gear including intelligence training equipment, with guides for questions and tours. About 93 soldiers and seven from Paola, Kansas City, and Burlington will participate.
The Oasis Club held its annual Christmas dinner on December 14. Rotary Rotnchords performed with Evaline Campbell on piano and John Brockway announcing. Gary Bateman of Kansas State Bank was named guest speaker for the Tuesday meeting. Also noted: Laurie Kaiser of Paola earned a BFA from Pittsburg State University with dean’s list honors and PSU Kanza yearbook feature. Nathan L. Childers completed Navy basic training in Orlando. the Ottawa Heart Association fundraiser raised 4739 dollars with 2384 from Paola.
Bob Wunsch of Kingman, a 1983 to 1989 House member, will not seek the Republican nomination for state insurance commissioner. Wunsch, 61, an attorney, said the effort is too great though he might consider politics later. He lost a 1988 re election bid to Democrat Bob Krehbiel in the 101st District.
The Kansas Association for Youth at Pomona Middle School will sponsor workshops around Kansas on January 18. More than 150 KAYS members from chapters statewide are expected. President Melissa Meitler says the theme is Journey of A Lifetime and focuses on learning planning futures and community improvement projects.
Newark Mayor Sharpe James objects to The Far Side cartoon depicting the city as a life path destination. In a Wednesday letter to editor Jake Morrissey, James asks to stop featuring Newark at the expense of New Jersey’s largest city.
The plan to name the site for Woodward continues from page 1 to repair brick street surfaces. Some bricks bear the inscription Ottawa Brick and Tile. Jackson notes the sale yields more than expected and Haworth, a retired builder, says he is buying bricks as an investment to resell, with a prospective buyer.
Warren Zimmerman, former ambassador to Yugoslavia, resigns from the State Department protesting U.S. Bosnia policy. He is the fifth such official in 17 months, and the most senior quitter. Zimmerman sent a letter to Secretary of State Warren Christopher declaring his decision amid ongoing fighting and stalled peace talks in Bosnia.
Tonight heavy clouds bring a cold period with a low near zero to five above and a north wind of five to fifteen mph. Saturday in Kansas looks dry with moderating afternoon temperatures from the twenties to the thirties. Lows stay below five above and highs reach the twenties east to thirties west. Sunday remains dry and warmer with lows fifteen to twenty and highs in the forties. Monday stays dry with lows in the twenties to teens in the northwest and highs from the north thirties to the low forties southward.
Kansas City officials expect a deal to turn Union Station into a science museum under a settlement with Trizec Properties. The nonprofit would receive Union Station, about 20 acres and 1.5 million dollars to redevelop the 1914 site, with aims to include a United Nations archives. City officials say it marks community ownership for the historic station.
In Topeka the 1994 Kansas legislative session focuses on Washburn University joining the state regents system and a quid pro quo to boost faculty salaries under the Partnership in Excellence. The plan would keep Washburn independent, fund salary increases to peer levels, and require more state and tuition revenue beginning with about seven million dollars in year one.
