An 11 a.m. Tuesday mishap in a stairwell at Ottawa Middle School left a .22 caliber bullet fired from a student’s pocket with no injuries. Assistant Principal Dale Fox said the student forgot the bullet was in his jacket pocket after visiting relatives and was disciplined. Police were not called.
The storm dumped up to 33 inches in Waynesburg Pennsylvania as Northeastern cities faced widespread disruption. Weather fatalities included a boy in New Hampshire, a man in West Virginia, and a New York contractor. Carbon monoxide deaths in Louisiana and a Florida mobile home fire add to toll. National Guardsmen aided in Kentucky delivering fuel and towing power crews after outages from as much as nine inches of snow.

Kansas Attorney General Bob Stephan cleared Lane City Council in three inquiries under the Open Meetings Law. City Clerk Sherry Chambers said questions focused on a special meeting notice, executive session use, and post adjournment discussion from August 2. The council received a December letter clearing it, read at a Monday meeting. attorney fees exceeded 450 dollars, and an ordinance now bans parking before the fire station with enforcement via tow.
The Kansas health care debate pits Roy plan supporters against Harder. Harder proposes turning the state Employees Health Care Commission into a broader health care purchasing agency.
