Former funeral home owner dies at 44

Ronn Heise former owner of Lamb Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa died Monday morning after a cancer battle. He was 44 and had run Pohlmann Heise Funeral Home in Russell. A Ronn Heise family fund was set up at Ottawa Kansas State Bank to offset illness costs. Heise was active in Ottawa business circles and community groups and eyed a return to Ottawa. Funeral details will be announced later.

Quiet New Year in Franklin County With Minor Vandalism

Franklin County Sheriff Craig Davis reports a quiet holiday with minor incident. An old church at 496 Woodson Road in Overbrook sustained interior damage after a late Monday visit by several youths, no arrests made, owner(s) to be located. Five youths aged 18 to 21 were removed. Mailboxes near Ottawa were slashed between late Saturday and Monday. no suspects. Reports of vehicle break ins at Canterbury Court Apartments on Saturday list stolen CDs and disc players.

Havana Beth Gunnels is 2006’s first birth at Ransom Memorial

Carie and Michael Gunnels of Ottawa welcomed Havana Beth Gunnels at 1:05 a.m. making her the first baby born at Ransom Memorial Hospital in 2006. The 6-pound 15-ounce girl joined sisters Maryah and Jasmine as the family prepared to celebrate.

Franklin County Flyers Freeze Fly At Ottawa Airport

Radio controlled airplane enthusiasts from Independence Missouri and nearby areas gathered New Year’s Day at the Ottawa Municipal Airport for the annual Franklin County Flyers Freeze Fly. Prizes were handed out and a pot luck lunch was served as pilots battled a crosswind during takeoffs and landings. Daryl Shutt, seen with his Top Flight Contender, noted the wind made approach nerves flutter but the event proceeded smoothly despite the challenge.

Iraq final election results may take weeks officials say

Iraq officials warned final results from last month's parliamentary vote may be delayed by two weeks while an international team reviews the conduct of the election. The Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq has completed nearly 2,000 complaint investigations, with 50 serious enough to affect results in some districts.
