Rikers to close gay prisoner dormitory on island
The New York jail system will shutter the gay and transgender dormitory at Rikers Island as part of a broader prisoner classification overhaul. With 56 inmates remaining, the unit could close within weeks, to be replaced by a protective custody system open to inmates who feel threatened, regardless of orientation. Critics warn the new setup may be more restrictive, while officials insist threats will still be addressed.
