Fireworks Hush Amid New Year in Western Kansas

Y2K passed with few issues in southwest and south central Kansas as fireworks sparked scattered police calls. Hutchinson reported bans ignored and two DUI arrests near midnight. Dispatchers in Dodge City Great Bend and Larned logged calls but no major incidents. Cameras failed in Reno County sheriffs cars. hospital and fire pumps functioned normally.

Three Die In Kansas Holiday Weekend Crashes

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports at least three fatalities in holiday weekend crashes. Michael A. Burgardt, 42, of Lindsborg, died on I-70 near Ellsworth in a one-vehicle wreck involving a U-Haul trailer. Brian Bertels, 19, of Nortonville, died after exiting a curve on Kansas 192 west of Winchester. Christopher A. Brazen, 27, of Soldier, died in a one-vehicle rollover on U.S. 59 in Jefferson County.
