Tax hike on alcohol and tobacco proposed to fund schools
TOPEKA AP An Emporia senator pressed two lobby groups as the Senate Committee heard proposals by Republican Sen. Jim Barnett to raise alcohol taxes 50 cents per six pack, 21 cents per wine bottle, and 31 cents per liter of liquor, plus a 10 cent per pack cigarette tax and $1 per carton tax. Barnett says the plan would yield $61 million in year one and lift base aid per pupil by $155, while opponents warn of regressivity and harm to low income Kansans.
