A broken water main on Main Street near Ottawa Middle School closed OMS at noon today. City officials sought the leak at noon and cautioned parents to check KOFO Tuesday morning for whether school will be in session. It remained unclear if the break linked to recent sub zero temperatures.
PEKA Kan AP The Senate Transportation and Utilities Committee endorsed raising interstate speed limits to 70 mph from 65 and two lane highway limits to 65 from 55. The measure adds a 10 mph buffer for ticketing insurance, requires possible lower two lane speeds where needed, and returns to the House for concurrence or a conference. Senator Harris urged 75 mph on interstates. Senator Lawrence opposed the uneven jump with two lanes.
The Lyric Arts Trio will present a Bach to Bernstein program blending piano clarinet and soprano at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Anderson County Junior/Senior High School auditorium. Two scores were selected from an Internet call for scores: Prairie Dairy by Kim Sherman and Songs about Food by Robert Maderich. Tickets are $3.50 for adults and $1.50 for children 12 and under. workshops for ACJSHS students precede the show.
In Gardner Johnson County native Carol Rodrock announced he would not seek the U S Senate seat vacated by Nancy Kassebaum. The rural developer had been exploring a candidacy after Rep Pat Roberts initially declined then later entered the race. Roberts is now seen as the Republican front runner in the contest.
GOP strategists mobilize in Iowa for 8 p m caucuses across 2142 precincts as Dole and Forbes clash. Forbes promotes a four three two one path while attacking the establishment. Dole frames himself as veteran leader criticizing ad overreach. Buchanan Gramm Alexander rally support amid fierce ads and policy focus.
The Kansas House moved a sand-dredging bill toward a final vote. It would nearly double the sand fee from 8 to 15 cents per ton, remove exemptions for the state and local entities, and require them to pay like private builders. The measure targets the Kansas River corridor from Topeka to Kansas City and extends to all rivers. A separate moratorium bill for the Kansas River from Manhattan to Lawrence will be heard by the Senate committee.
