West Franklin honors teacher Fran Burkett as Teacher of the Year
The West Franklin district names Fran Burkett 2002 03 Teacher of the Year for Appanoose Elementary. Burkett, longtime Reading Recovery instructor, was surprised and honored at a ceremony. Principal Rick Smith praises her impact on first grade reading recovery and student success.

Sheldon Pokorney principal at Wellsville High School announces Mark Samsel is a 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program commended student. The top 5 percent of over 1 million entrants from the 2003 competition earned this distinction. Leslie McCreight of Ottawa participated in the Kansas City Renaissance Festival last fall and attends Emporia State University.
