Discovery launches with first joint U S Russian crew on shuttle

Discovery lifted at 7 10 a m EST on an eight day science mission carrying five Americans and cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev the first U S Russian manned flight since Apollo Soyuz. Officials praised on time launch and warm 46 degree weather.

State to take 105 feet of right of way on US 59 and cemetery

Todd told Franklin County commissioners that the state plans to seize 105 feet of right of way in front of his east side property on US 59, and 105 feet from Roselawn Cemetery. He complained of late notice and possible harm to cemetery appearance, urging opposition to the project and a KDOT briefing. County Engineer Bob Pepple to contact KDOT for details.

Fogles map plan for quarry area includes housing and golf

Fogles outline a planned quarry development near US-59 Radio Road with six to forty four acre residential parcels and a non signature golf course. A 40 acre lake is planned in the southeast corner and another 20 to 25 acre lake is possible east of the highway. Homes are expected to range from 75000 to 100000 dollars, up to 300000 for some.

Volunteers honored for Franklin County Road Recovery program

Coordinators and volunteers from the Franklin County Road Recovery Transportation Program were honored for 1993 service. Gilbert Martin led the effort with 74 drivers making 107 trips to Kansas City or Topeka. 121 volunteers exist though more are needed. Ten Ottawa churches participate.

Hendrix and Praeger file treasurers for insurance commissioner bid

In Topeka Kansas State Sen. Sandy Praeger filed her campaign treasurer and Rep. Walker Hendrix named his treasurer to begin fundraising for possible campaigns for state insurance commissioner. Incumbent Ron Todd and Dan Martinez had filed treasurers last year. The filing deadline is June 10.

Ottawa OKs grant fix and Black History Month

Ottawa commissioners amended the Community Development Block Grant budget, moving 15 000 from demolition to rehabilitation, with 300 000 grant and 78 800 local funds. They proclaimed February Black History Month and received a 100 donation from the Ottawa Black Awareness Committee for the Don Woodward Community Center. Also approved downtown sidewalk sale Feb 26 and KOFO home and garden show closures March 11 and 12.
