Tribes to gain title for Sand Creek Massacre site
The Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma are to receive a deed from a casino management company for land that will form the core of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. Congress must act again to place the land in trust before the National Park Service can manage it with the Colorado Historical Society, with the site 180 miles southeast of Denver. The 1864 raid killed about 163 Cheyenne and Arapaho, mostly noncombatants, and the tribes have sought a monument for decades.
