The 1985 duck season ends soon with Canadas and whitefronts closing January 5 and light geese until January 31. Late mallard flights, rivers and open-water pockets offer few chances as grain on the ground tempts birds. January still holds upland bird hunting with licenses expiring next Tuesday. 1986 licenses rise marginally with $9.50 for hunting and fishing, $3 hatchery fee, $21.50 combo, and $200.50 lifetime option.

National wildlife surveys and bird counts announced
In January 130000 households nationwide will be polled by telephone about hunting and fishing participation. In April 39000 individuals will be interviewed on public use of natural resources in the U S. The 1985 survey, funded by sporting groups through excise taxes, forecasts wildlife recreation demand and outdoor participation trends. The 1980 data showed 42 million fish, 17 million hunt, and 83 million in nonconsumptive outdoor activities. Two area reservoirs join the Christmas Bird Count by the National Audubon Society. Pomona Reservoir holds its 10th count this Sunday at 7 a.m. Hillsdale Reservoir outdoors count is Jan 4 at 7:30 a.m. Call 453-2201 for Pomona, or 783-4366 for Hillsdale.
