Sears to close up to 100 small stores nationwide
The Chicago Tribune reports Sears Roebuck plans to shutter as many as 100 smaller stores and cut up to 5000 jobs. The plan includes shrinking the Big Book mail order catalog and shifting to specialty catalogs, with closures announced next month. Ottawa's Sears at 106 S Main said to remain unaffected due to local ownership.

Retirement reception for Franklin County official Sherrie Capper
A retirement reception for Sherrie Capper, Franklin County register of deeds, will be held 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday December 30 in the main hallway of the Franklin County Courthouse. Capper was first elected in January 1969 and announced last May she would retire. Sue McCay, a Democrat, won the post in November and takes office in January.

County upgrades 911 system with new software package
Gilges said the sheriff's office is seeking a new software package to meet dispatching needs and that the proposal would cover all 911 dispatch requirements. Commissioners debated funding, noting about 50 000 dollars would remain in the 911 tax revenue fund at year end from a 75 cent monthly levy on county phone customers. Bowling would consult the county attorney and suggested the software might be paid from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund while hardware could be drawn from 911's computer fund.
