Central Heights school board meets at 7 30 tonight at the school complex to approve additional state aid as enrollment rose, and to hear Superintendent Leo Laird announce his resignation effective year end. Laird, 59, has led the district since 1974 after a 33 year tenure in consolidated district joint 10.
Kansas Court of Appeals ruled that non residents may obtain abortions in Kansas and seek a judicial waiver of parental notification. The unsigned, sealed opinion, tied to the 1992 abortion law, states residency is not required for abortion or for waiving parental notification, guiding future cases while keeping identities anonymous.
At least 52 killed and 23 missing in the Martinair jet crash near Faro Portugal with 330 aboard. Reports from officials in Amsterdam and Algarve authorities give varying tallies as rescue teams coped with flames, ambulances, and hospitalizations.
