Budget talks stall on temporary plan
White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta says budget talks with Newt Gingrich and budget leaders stalled over House Republicans’ reluctance to recall furloughed federal workers. Panetta noted GOP freshmen demanded deeper cuts using CBO estimates, threatening a temporary spending measure to restart nine Cabinet agencies. He will report to President Clinton and seek a way to break the impasse.
