Opera Star John Charles Thomas tape in court shows jet noise
In Federal District Court Judge Walter A. Haxman heard a tape recording of six jet engines from a B47 bomber while opera tenor John Charles Thomas’s singing was played for comparison. Fourteen Forbes Air Force Base property owners sue the government for 91129 claiming noise and fumes lowered property values. Plaintiff Don T. Campbell valued his house at 16500 but said it could sell for about 7000. The judge overruled a U S district attorney objection to the tape recorder. Trial without a jury likely to last three days.

State hospitals seek additional nine million funding
The State Division of Institutions urged restoration of over nine million dollars cut by the Budget Department for the 1962 fiscal year. They asked for operating expenditures of 23,883,372 and capital improvements of 8,910,722, while the Budget Department proposed 21.7 million for operations and 1.6 million for capital. Gov elect Anderson attended hearings and questioned Norton Tuberculosis Hospital, housing for staff, and potential use of Norton as a minimum security prison to alleviate overcrowding. Jackson, director of institutions, warned against closing Norton TB facility until alternative means suffice, noting Chanute TB hospital and future outpatient clinics could absorb the TB load within two to three years. Housing for staff is a nominal fringe benefit to attract personnel.
