Congo Problem Still Hanging Fire In UN
The United Nations General Assembly failed to close the Congo crisis after defeating a referendum on Algeria and shelving disarmament proposals. A Congo vote was postponed until March 7 as delegates, led by V K Krishna Menon, debated Hammarskjold’s possible action to withdraw UN forces if civil war looms. The US and Britain backed a measure to aid Kasavubu while India Yugoslavia and others urged reconvening Parliament and freeing Lumumba. The Algeria referendum was also vetoed by the US which abstained on part of the measure. The Political Committee paused general disarmament as the session recessed.
