Iraq attacks Saudi split in OPEC price move
Iraq accuses Saudi Arabia of pressuring OPEC to freeze prices and urges Arab nations to condemn the move. Saudi and UAE resist a 15 percent price hike, sticking to a 5 percent rise while boosting production. U.S. officials react with cautious approval. Yamani warns against premature celebration as the rift widens.
Saudis and UAE Trigger Small Oil Price Rise
President Ford and President elect Carter welcomed Saudi Arabia and the UAE for a 5 percent oil price hike to 1977, while the other 10 OPEC members approved a two step 15 percent rise. Yamani warned against optimism, saying OPEC remains strong and could adjust production to meet demand. Vance and Carter pledged to thank Saudi Arabia and the UAE for their actions as MobilOil projected a roughly one cent per gallon U.S. gasoline price increase in February or March.
