Gary E. Thomason of Coffeyville pleaded guilty in Police Court to a reduced charge for having an open bottle accessible to a driver. Judge Winton A. Winter fined him 35 dollars and dismissed drunk driving and reckless driving charges. Thomason was cited on Dec. 5. Ottawa High School students join locker decorating before Christmas break.
Funeral services for C. Dewey Funk who died Dec. 12 were held Dec. 16 at McVey-Dengel Mortuary with Rev. Roger Fred rikson officiating. Pallbearers included Raymond Bengston Hiram Brown ing Walter Pierson James Hollon Frank Cook Ben Printy Joe Ross. Mrs R L Stevens played organ. Masonic services by Ottawa Lodge No 18 A F A M Charles W Watts P M officiated. Burial in Evergreen Mound Cemetery.
Senator Carlson of Kas returns from a world tour and reports the Mid and Far East view the United States favorably. He warns communists seek to sway locals, noting attention on Hungary and Indonesia. He attended the British Commonwealth Interparliamentary Union in New Delhi December 2 to 12 as a U. S. Senate delegate.
Southwestern Bell will build nine repeater stations between Qitana Paola and Olathe to boost long distance calls. Cornelius Construction won the contract. work starts January 1 and should finish by April 1. The plan precedes underground cable to Ottawa Paola and Olathe to prevent weather disruptions.

A district court jury began hearing testimony in the appeal of Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Cathcard regarding an award for land taken for the rejection of US 50. Jurors include Eugene McDowell, Leo Metze, Rollo L. Carter, Tilford Simmons, Mrs. J. Stephenson, O. D. Stoffer, Fred Lemon, Robert Hudsonson, Russell Wray, A. R. Machlan, Edgar Swank, and Kenneth Hunsacker.
In police court this morning a reckless driving case and a speeding case were heard. Carroll Ray Mc Cool, 17, of 804 S Oak, pleaded guilty to speeding 40 in a 30 mile zone from Powhatan to Red Jaker on North Sycamore, and was fined $10 by Judge Winton A. Winter. Robert Eugene Samuelson, 21, of Axtell, pled guilty to reckless driving on North Main between Keokuk and Tecumseh. the judge held the case under advisement for more facts.
Funeral services were held for A L Tel Abshire 86 of Iola a former Franklin County resident who died December 6 at his home. He operated a Ft Lupton grocery after leaving the Fairview area in 1918 and later remarried in Iola. Surviving are his widow three daughters and one son. Also noted are services for infant twin son John Craig of Richmond born November 22 who died December 13 at the Anderson County Hospital. burial followed at St Boniface Cemetery.
H W Bill Martin of 1314 Willow learns his grandfather Robert Lew Beightol, 86, Tulsa Okla, died at 3 a m. He born Dec 31 1870 in Ottawa, known as a steam threshing operator. President Eisenhower, though feeling well, passed up the afternoon NATO foreign ministers session as officials continued talks. Secretary Dulles said the president might join later if substantive matters arose.
Mrs Ava Thompson resigns as fiscal officer of Franklin County Welfare. Helen Carey, longtime office clerk, appointed to the post. Bonita Welborn to fill her clerical job, with Margie Adcock coming in from Ottawa University to take Welborns former role. Thompson plans to move to Topeka.
Denver residents vote on a city income tax to fund services and improvements. The plan would tax all employed in Denver, including suburban workers, at 1 percent on income over 5 000 with a 1 000 exemption for families, and 1 percent on the first 5 000 of income. Estimated annual revenue is seven million dollars. Mayor Will F. Nicholson cites need to fund highways and parks.
A new eight month study by Bruce Smith Jr. of New York faults Frisco Police for weak supervision and restrictive promotions. The report, 143 pages, recommends a complete top to bottom reorganization as crime rises while solvable cases decline.
State Accident Records Section lists 3 fatalities in past 24 hours and 543 to date in 1957 with 644 in the same period in 1956. The update notes two earlier deaths not previously reported.
Robert Dale Chambers aged 29 of 318 W 5th entered a guilty plea in Police Court to drunken driving and reckless driving. Judge Winton A Winter fined $100 sentenced him to 30 days in jail then paroled him for two years. License suspended. Cited Nov 21 after collision with a parked car.
In Clearwater Kansas area a car hit a Roth Island freight train at a grade crossing six miles east of Clearwater. N L Shropshirer 56 and Melton E Foust 46 of Hutchinson died. Orville D Luginbill Burrton seriously injured and William E Wise 23 Hutchinson seriously injured. Fog suspected as cause.
TOPEKA A Kansas Board of Regents member McDi Boyd Phillipsburg submitted extra information to the budget division to justify salary increases at state schools. He said the board will not retreat from its demand for a five percent overall hike, arguing raises on a merit basis require a total five percent rise.
