Italian Breed Invades Franklin County Beef Herds
Donald Smith of Williamsburg crossbreeds with the Italian Chianina, expanding local herds. He reports the breed as rugged and fast growing, with first crosses Holstein Angu s in May Charolais in June and Brown Swiss in November. Smith plans to use Holstein Anguin a Chianina and Charolais Chianina mating stock until a Chianina bull is purchased. The breed traces to the Roman Empire and is among Italy's oldest cattle. Birth weights cited by Italian breeders are about 100 pounds for males and 85 for females, though Smith notes calm calving with refined newborns.
