Officials warn of lengthy Afghan campaign continues
Washington officials say American forces may stay in Afghanistan for years to pursue Osama bin Laden and al Qaida leaders after the Taliban collapse. Deputy Defense Secretary Wolfowitz and Vice President Cheney stressed objectives beyond defeating militants, avoiding an occupying role, and supporting a post Taliban government with aid and possibly UN peacekeepers. Generals note the campaign will require ongoing military involvement and that bin Laden is likely in eastern Afghanistan near Tora Bora as U.S. special forces aid local anti Taliban fighters.
