Wolf Creek NRC ratings draw safety program review

Wolf Creek nuclear plant earned its lowest rating in safety assessment quality verification for the year end October and plans programs to boost safety and quality checks. Boarded by Otto Maynard the plant’s operations vice president says NRC concerns persist despite higher marks in other areas including Category 1 security and radiological controls. The NRC report released Friday ahead of a Dec. 16 public meeting at the plant reviews specifics for owners Kansas City Power and Light Western Resources and Kansas Electric Power Cooperatives.

NRC propose 50000 dollar fine for Wolf Creek valve error

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission proposed a 50000 dollar penalty after a valve was moved out of position during maintenance at Wolf Creek nuclear plant, reducing flow in a key safety system. The condition went undetected for about a month, was reported on Aug 27, and corrected the next day. No direct danger occurred, but the device could be needed in a loss of coolant accident.

Farm Bureau delegates meet at Kansas convention in Wichita

Franklin County Farm Bureau members joined more than 1,000 farmers at the 74th Kansas Farm Bureau annual meeting in Wichita to discuss international trade environmental policies and health care. Delegates elected officers and prepared resolutions for the 1993 program to be sent to the American Farm Bureau Federation in Anaheim January 10 to 14. Also noted is Judy D. Cates and her American Quarter Horse Miss Blues Seeker earning an Amateur Performance Champion Award with 267 points in AQHA events. Ottawa student Adam Weigand led KSU to victory in the National Meats Judging Contest at Dakota City, Neb, scoring 1,000 points and contributing to his team’s first-place finish.
