TV Turns To Light Escape Entertainment Signaling New TV Era
AP Television Radio writer Cynthia Lowry reports that entertainment shows are shifting toward lighter escapist themes. Industry executives like Daniel Melnick of Talent Associates discuss cycles from beach party fare to neo realism to social dramas, now moving toward romantic comedies. Televisions programs age quickly, with dramatic runs about three seasons and comedies about four, influencing new programming choices and genre emphasis. CBS plans color coverage for the Tournament of Roses and NBC features weekend viewing options including Victory at Sea and Sage of Western Man along with Best on Record.
