Ottawa hosts record parade and growing Patrons Tour turnout

Ottawa events wrapped a busy Christmas season with a Patrons Tour turnout near 1993 levels, a record 53 entrants in the parade, and new commercial and noncommercial categories. Winners included Rowdy Wranglers 4-H and Underwood Equipment, with prizes funded by local sponsors. Gingerbread contest prizes ranged from 55 to 75 dollars.

DAR chapter meets and welcomes new members

The Edward Hand Chapter of DAR met on Saturday November 12 1994 at Madge Callihan's home. Two new members Anne Marie Camp and Donna Kapp Olson were welcomed. A DAR marker was placed on the grave of Edna Lewis Gardner. Plans were set for the March State Conference in Emporia. The program was by state regent Mrs Clark. The next meeting will be at Betty Salsbury's home. Army Reserve Private Aaron K Defenbaugh completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood.

Olathe Men Charged With Aggravated Criminal Sodomy

John Michael Bauer of Olathe and Rodney Callow of Ottawa, both 41, face two felony counts of aggravated criminal sodomy in Johnson County for allegedly molesting two Olathe brothers between 1993 and 1994. Police say up to five more boys ages 11 to 15 may be involved. DA expects more charges. Bail set at 75,000 each.

FBI reports mixed early 1994 crime trends

FBI officials note a twofold pattern with elderly adults aging out of violence and juveniles becoming more violent. Murders fell 2 percent in early 1994, forcible rape down 6 percent, robbery down 4 percent, and aggravated assault down 3 percent. Burglary declined 6 percent, while larceny theft and auto theft each dropped 2 percent.
