Ottawa Fire Department receives grant for diesel exhaust system
Ottawa Fire Department will install a ceiling mounted exhaust extraction system after a 22,815 dollar grant from the U S Department of Homeland Security. Fire Chief Jeff Carner says trucks start about 2,000 times yearly, emitting diesel fumes and soot into the bay. The grant is part of the 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, now in its 24th round, aiding equipment purchases and safety programs nationwide. Ottawa qualified for the first time this year and expects installation within two months.

Kansas Education Funding Questioned by Courts
Attorneys argued that districts with many poor minority and limited English students struggle more, while Kansas spends 3,863 per pupil with extra funds for lunches or small districts. Rulings show inequities up to 300 percent between districts, from about 5,500 to over 16,000 per pupil. Local superintendents hope weighting remains in new formulas, and Sebelius and others endorse reform aligned with No Child Left Behind as a budget review proceeds in 2004.
