Overland Park teen convicted of murder
Alfred Jerome Williams, 17, was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder and four counts of attempted first degree murder for a Sept. 24 shooting outside Olathe North High School amid a rival high school fight. The verdicts also condemned him for wounding four others. Williams testified he aimed to fire into the air to save a friend. A mistrial had occurred in May after witness conduct concerns.

In Douglas County two homicide cases see preliminary hearings set for September. Damon L. McKay, 23, Topeka, faces first degree murder for a August 15 shooting in a Lawrence parking lot that killed Onzie A. Branch, 24. Kara E. Smith, 18, Lyndon, charged with second degree murder in the August 14 infant death in Lawrence. McKay’s hearing is Sept. 4 with bond set at $1 million. Smith is Sept. 3 on $10,000 bond. District Attorney Christine Kenny Tonkovich noted Douglas County had gone over two years without a homicide before a May Kansas Turnpike case.
