Not Bad For A Bunch Of Stray Dogs
In Fort Lauderdale Florida AP eighty one stray dogs inherit about fourteen million dollars from the estate of Eleanor Ritchey a Broward County spinster who died in 1968. The will left four point five million to 150 dogs and the assets have since grown to about eighteen million. Most funds are in Quaker State stock and the dogs live on a 180 acre ranch near Deerfield Beach. Annual costs include about seventeen thousand for food and housing and twelve thousand for weekly medical care. The heirs are parked in an antiseptic clinic, tattooed as proof of original membership, and separated by sex to prevent reproduction. The bequest remains in effect until the last dog dies or twenty years, then passes to Auburn University for study of small animal diseases. Relatives argued Ritchey lost touch with reality after a lawsuit forced her to move the dogs in 1967 due to barking complaints.
