State panel report tough on third graders

Kan sas children would be held back from progressing up the school grade ladder if they could not pass a set of competency tests at the end of the third grade under a proposal delivered today to Gov. Joan Finney. The 14 member task force urged a barrier at the end of third grade with tests and intensified help for those not ready for fourth grade, plus pre kindergart en programs and parent advocate support.

Enrollment rises at Ottawa schools and colleges

Ottawa officials released preliminary enrollment figures showing Ottawa High School with 630 students, Ottawa Middle 550, and several elementary schools with counts ranging from 159 to 293. Sacred Heart reports 101, up seven from last year, while Neosho County Community College Ottawa campus reports 535 students and 4,289 credit hours, reflecting a traditional daytime-student uptick.

Off-duty Topeka officer dies after drunken crash

Police say 34 year old Paul Ballou had a blood alcohol level more than twice the limit when his pickup crashed near Topeka. Reconstruct ion shows he was northbound at about 70 mph passing another car, lost control, and rolled, impaling Ballou on a fence. Deputy Michael Mulford, 33, was riding as an off duty passenger.

Lake Pomona Night Hike and Star Tracks Event Duo

The Corps of Engineers hosts two free Lake Pomona programs this weekend. Friday at 9 p.m. Ranger Dave Pape leads a 45 minute Deer Creek Nature Trail hike meeting at Outlet Amphitheater. Saturday at 9:15 p.m. at Poweshiek Amphitheater the Star Tracks program explores constellations and mythical stories with weather-dependent viewing.

Man charged in fatal I 70 crash near Topeka

A 22 year old from Kansas City Missouri faces charges of reckless driving leaving the scene and no liability insurance after a July August I 70 Topeka crash that killed two 16 year old Leavenworth girls Michelle DeBarthe and Laura Fitzgerald. The driver of a semi truck braked to avoid Marken pull in causing a parked highway patrol car and another vehicle to be hit.
