Bill Pickering, a 32 year old from Bloxwich England, swam the English Channel in 14 hours and 6 minutes after a local ultimatum. He set out from Dover with a thousand dollars raised for expenses and completed the crossing to Calais, saying he swam to satisfy his hometown.
Larry Averill 19 of Wellsville won Grand Champion Hereford steer in the 4-H division at the Franklin County Fair in Ottawa. A shorthorn steer owned by him placed first in its class. He also earned the annual Angus calf award from Sunrise Valley Farm Ottawa for outstanding 4-H club work. Larry has served as vice president of SHAFY and the Junior Leaders Club and 4-H Council this year. The Richmond fair saw him capture the 4-H Baby Beef grand championship.
