The United States posted its second trade surplus of the year in July as foreign demand for American goods remained at record highs, per the Commerce Department findings. Exports exceeded imports, underscoring strong overseas markets for U.S. products.
A government armored column pushed along Highway 4 in search of the rebel rocket firing site near Phnom Penh airport. Three Soviet 122mm rockets struck near the runway before dawn, causing no casualties. Government forces cleared several villages but could not locate the launch site by noon. Nearby fighting saw Khmer Rouge infiltrators intercepted north of the airport, while rebels briefly seized two miles of Highway 24 toward Srang. Washington reports an errant radar-navigator caused the Aug. 6 Neak Luong bombing, killing or wounding more than 400. Trade data show July exports at a record level with a large surplus, aided by dollar devaluations and strong farm and machinery demand. Four baby-contest photos in the Franklin County Fair were misidentified but corrected in the latest edition.
Robert Clack a 52 year old Kansas State University engineering professor and farmer near Manhattan said in a KMAN radio interview he might seek the Republican nomination for governor in 1974. He plans a final decision by year end and aims to offer Kansas voters a genuine choice in government.
