Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower writes in a national magazine advocating scrapping the present draft for universal military training. He calls for a year of service for all 18 year olds with three weeks cut, with limited exceptions, or an alternative two year enlistment earning veterans’ benefits. The piece notes Congress’ reluctance to tackle the issue now.
The New York Herald founded in 1835 by James Gordon Bennett and the New York Tribune started six years later by Horace Greeley waged a royal editorial battle. In 1924 the two papers merged into the Herald.
