Gov Bennett ordered Kansas flags at half staff to honor guard Donald R. Martin who died from head injuries after an escape attempt at the Kansas State Penitentiary. Inmate Roscoe Barnes was charged with assault during the escape effort. Barnes is in custody as investigators review the case amid reports of another two prisoner fatalities nearby.
