Communist forces fired numerous rockets at Da Nang and Chu Lai injuring 22 Americans and 72 Vietnamese and damaging 16 aircraft, in the year's worst strike on Da Nang. One American airman died, with 21 other U.S. and Army personnel casualties reported.
From Topeka a warm weekend is forecast with mostly sunny skies in the north and cooling edges. Thundershowers are possible in the south and west today and again Sunday night into Monday, with highs from the low 90s in the northwest to near 100 in the south central plains. Overnight lows range from the low 60s to low 70s, and precipitation chances stay low. The national tally notes Vietnam era updates and air base rocket attacks during the Da Nang and Chu Lai operations, including casualties and battlefield moves, with U.S. air strikes continuing in the region.
A middle aged man hijacked United Airlines Flight No 877 in Reno and forced it to land at Vancouver International Airport. He demanded $2 million in cash and a small arsenal of public safety items electronic gear and gold bars to aid children disabled in the Vietnam war. The plane carried three crew members and a handful of passengers who were ordered off. The hijacker dictated messages from the plane and wanted CJOR to broadcast them. The FBI said the motive appeared to be to see the money and equipment on the ground.
Franklin County Republican Central Committee met to elect officers for 1972-1974 and plan for the November election. James Grogan was re-elected chairman with Almeda Edwards as vice chair. Clarice Dengel became secretary. Grogan urged reform talks on quota representation, opposed by the committee. Members discussed canvassing, voter turnout, and filling posts for fair booth, campaign HQ, and barbecue. Delegates Grogan, Edwards, Burroughs, Doris Grogan, and Cecile Lindsey to the district convention. Bill Ransom to continue as treasurer. Forrest Kelly to chair Finance with Hilton and Lindsey. Robert Shields to lead the President Committee with Edwards as vice chair. Attending candidates included Leroy Wasmund and Wint Winter.
Kissinger arrived in Tokyo after two days with President Thieu in Saigon. He plans talks with Prime Minister Tanaka and Foreign Minister Ohira about the Honolulu U S Japan summit later this month. He will report to Nixon at Camp David on return.
In Miami Beach the GOP battles over the 1976 convention begin with a delegate allotment plan favoring smaller solid states. Critics assail McGovern and Pierre Salinger as he weighs Vietnam prisoner-release issues, with Sen. Gordon Allott calling the meddling reckless.
Ottawa police officer Buck reported a red light near the moon in the 800 block of South Cherry while Kansas Turnpike motorists and several Kansas towns including Ellis Stockton LaCrosse Phillipsburg Victoria and Yocemento experienced widespread UFO reports. Authorities noted lights circling Ellis at 2 33 am with lights surrounding the city in all directions at about two to three miles up.
A young Democrat from State Headquarters in Topeka attended a Franklin County Republican Central Committee meeting. He listened through the session, accepted brochures, and opened a large box of campaign material for Robert Docking, engaging attendees in political discussion and adding a humorous twist to the event.
Franklin County Fair Board adds a pole building for poultry and rabbits boosting exhibits. Thirty two chickens and 34 rabbits enter, dairy rises to six entries, beef 56, swine 43, sheep down to 24. Parade grows with large crowds. Tonight features 4 H style revue and queen crowning, with eight finalists including Marla Jackson. Saturday boasts 60 German Shepherds, air helicopter show, foot races, greased pig contest, Western band, awards at 9, and a benefit dance for local fire victims.
