The Commerce Department reports the balance of payments deficit improved in the April June quarter. Official reserve transactions show a $2.5 billion reduction to $831 million, while the net liquidity balance fell by $800 million to $2.8 billion from $3.1 billion. Speculation against the dollar persisted in late June and continued into July before easing. President Nixon's prior dollar devaluation reduced pressures, but last year still marked a record deficit of $29.7 billion.

The IRA reportedly turned to nitrobenzene after raids cut its supply. Authorities say about 13,000 pounds of blasts substances were seized in two weeks.
