Rotary brief covers Europe trip and local notices

Karl Klein and members of the Lawrence and Ottawa Rotary Clubs discussed a trip to the Rotary International convention in Lucerne Switzerland. Other Rotarians present included Carl Butel Don Nut Frans Fahey and Dr Roy Browning. Funeral notices and state finance council activity were also noted along with civic interest in Quenemo new home tours and cadet West Point furloughs.

Deaths include Mrs Mary Sutton former Osawatomie pastor’s widow

Mrs Mary Wharton Sutton 74 of Glendale Calif formerly of Ottawa died yesterday in Independence at a friend’s home after a heart attack ten days post visit. She was the widow of Rev R K Sutton who served as pastor at First Methodist Osawatomie. Services set for Independence and Neosho Falls Cemetery. Also funeral arrangements for Roy E Fisher 69 Kansas City retiree and Ottawa native who died in Stillwater. Fisher and wife ran Parisian Style Shop. survived by widow son Ellsworth and brother Edwin. buried in Stillwater.

End Probe of Woman's Death Ends in Lenexa

Lenexa Kansas authorities concluded the investigation into the death of 53 year old waitress Clara Springeman after toxicology showed high alcohol in stomach and blood but not enough to cause death. Coroner Dr R D Grayson noted samples were taken two days after death and alcohol levels could have been higher earlier. Springeman was found by county officers after neighbors reported she had not been seen since Saturday. She lay on the floor near a broken table in her home.

Beech Aircraft Increases Wages In Three States

Beech Aircraft Corp reports an automatic wage rise adding nearly 114 million dollars to annual payroll. About 7,800 hourly workers at Beech facilities in Wichita, Herrington, Liberal, Boulder, and other sites received a 1.5 cent per hour raise under a three year pact reached July 30, 1956 with District Lodge 70 of the IAM.

Missouri couple to be tried for forging and passing check

Chanute Kansas report says Mr. and Mrs. McKinely Jones will be tried in October in district court on a charge of forging and passing a $48 check. They were bound over after a preliminary hearing in city court. bonds could not be posted and they returned to county jail. Lucille Jones admitted passing 26 bad checks in the area. Dorothy Moerer’s charges were dropped.

Co-Op Elevator Painted White

The new Co-Op elevator on North Main has been painted white in record time. To reduce dust from traffic and protect cars on Main Street the contractor worked mainly during late and early hours. Painting started at 3 p.m. and finished before noon the following day.

John Brown Road Being Blacktopped

A collision on John Brown Road near Williamsburg halted traffic for repairs as two cars damaged the roadway. No injuries were reported. The Franklin county project is being done by Harry Henry Inc. of Ottawa under county supervision and follows a prior resurfacing from Robert F. Wasson.

Local Markets of Williamsburg Collision Test Drives Route

Local Markets of Williamsburg pulled across Highway US 50 and collided with Wasson. Police and Roland Johnson responded. Estimated vehicle damages were $400 to the Young car and $300 to the Wasson car. Wasson reported to the Ottawa employment office and has not yet moved.

Pigeons Build Nest on Courtroom Window Ledge

After weeks of failed nesting attempts and repeated disruption by a janitor, a pair of pigeons completed a nest on a courtroom window ledge in Dist. Judge Jackson B. Chase's Domestic Relations Court. The judge declared the nest would not be disturbed.

Graveside services for Mrs Mabel Fisher who died August 2 were conducted yesterday at Highland Cemetery. Rev Charles P Knight officiated.

Parole Application for Loren B E Coghill Scheduled

Loren B E Coghill from Franklin County faces parole review by the Board of Penal Institutions. He will present his application at the board’s next meeting in Lansing Kansas on August 6 1957. Case notes indicate conviction in Ferg Ind Conc with second court number 1. The notice runs from July 17 to August 21 1957.
