In Halstead Kansas the bridge and dam famed from the movie Picnic narrowly escaped collapse during recent floods. Water eroded about 100 feet of the Little Arkansas River north bank last week until dirt and concrete dumped into the river diverted it back to its natural channel.

In Mellen Wisconsin a 3 week old calf named Melody was rejected by herd and found foster care with a horse. Thirteen year old Maraja assists at Jim Kniola's farm where Melody now drinks milk from the horse, helping expand the herd.
A panel at a south central Kansas tourism summit described Wichita as a friendly but overlooked city with many museums and attractions. They urged brand differentiation, stronger marketing alliances, and leveraging new technologies like the Internet to boost occupancy and convention bookings amid aging hotels and sagging tourism. Leaders emphasized building a stronger product before selling it and highlighted Kansas towns expanding zoos, museums, and cultural assets.
Galen Lee Gentry 48 of Alma died August 4 at a Topeka hospital. Funeral services 11 a.m. Friday at Peace United Church of Christ Alma with Rev. Henry A. Roberts Jr. officiating. Burial in Peace UCC cemetery. Memorials to Wabaunsee County Ambulance Service or Alma Chamber of Commerce fireworks fund. Gentry born February 7 1951 in Ottawa to Leon W. and Frankie Weis Gentry. He owned Gentry Funeral Home Alma 1980 1994 and ran Gentry’s Home Entertainment since 1980. He served as paramedic and service director for Wabaunsee County Ambulance Service and BISCPR instructor for Alma Volunteer Fire Department. Survived by wife Marcia, children Christopher, Kimberly, Tricha, parents, three brothers, sister, grandmother and step granddaughter.
Western Resources Inc. will not leave Kansas if its proposed 2.1 billion merger with Kansas City Power and Light Co. stalls approval but may be forced to sell its utility unit. Chairman David Wittig said the company would seek a fair regulatory environment or consider offers from out-of-state firms for KPL and KGE.
