At noon on Wall Street the Dow fell 146.48 to 8918.14 while the S and P 500 dropped 22.20 to 1085.70 and the Nasdaq slid 49.33 to 1819.63. The NYSE composite lost 11.28 to 563.19 and the AMEX declined 13.10 to 728.76. Local quotes show grains and stocks moving lower with county grain prices posted.
The Herald corrects a Friday report stating Rep. Bill Feuerborn of Garnett seeks a second term. Feuerborn, 50, is finishing his second term and is running for a third term in the legislature.
Nellie Nadine Johnson Lederer 78 of Ottawa died April 25 1998 at home. Funeral at Richter United Methodist Church April 29 burial Sutton Cemetery. Survived by husband two daughters Kay Johnson and Helen Ramshaw two sons John H Lederer and Jim Lederer a sister Arlene Ingle nine grandchildren 17 great grandchildren. Martha Mabel Elder Shader 82 of Ottawa died April 24 1998 at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Funeral at Grace Episcopal Church April 28 burial Hope Cemetery. Survived by a son Roger L Shader a daughter Carol Shader and three daughters Sally Gildner Betty Stark with listed spouses and families.
A court-appointed monitor cleared James P. Hoffa to seek the Teamsters presidency but barred a key aide from participating. Election officer Michael Cherkasky cited misconduct in several cases yet found most Hoffa campaign contributions from lawful sources. Several Hoffa state members were fined for rule violations and the campaign was fined for in-kind services. The ruling assigns personal responsibility to Hoffa for misreported donations.
Auxiliary Bishop Juan Gerardi Conedera was beaten to death in his Guatemala City home two days after presenting a scathing 36-year civil war human rights report titled Never Again in Guatemala. Prosecutors have not yet established motive as blood and drag marks marked the garage scene.
