Government and business push poverty battle in DC show
Washington reports government and business expanding fronts against poverty as the Poor People’s Campaign readies its capital demonstration. A coalition of five religious groups urged the Supreme Court to recognize a constitutional right to government relief. Vice President Humphrey announced a $59 million program largely funded by private firms to build six factories in Los Angeles and Brooklyn where slum residents would be hired and trained, with $52.1 million from business and $6.9 million from the government. The White House backs efforts to create 500,000 jobs for the hard-core unemployed by 1971. A new Urban Research Institute formed at the White House aims to study city issues including housing, crime, traffic and air pollution. Five national groups filed the brief urging relief rights, led by the American Jewish Congress and Catholic Charities groups.
