Center mulls Friendly plan for old Ottawa middle school
Bob Marsh of the Friends of Historic Buildings urged the Ottawa City Commission to back converting part of the old middle school at Fifth and Main into a community center funded by a state tax credit program. The plan envisions a large convention area, kitchen, three meeting rooms, a theater, and rentals to groups once equipped. The Suzuki Strings show interest in the theater as a funding draw. The group seeks public leases to persuade state approval for $210,000 in tax credits to purchase furnishings and equipment.

Budget battles loom as lawmakers return to Topeka
Abortion foes seek to override Governor Sebelius veto on clinic regulation while gambling advocates push new casino proposals. Lawmakers reconvene on the 79th day with education funding off the table due to a pending Kansas Supreme Court ruling expected by mid May. The session faces a tight four day window to finish an $11.3 billion budget, with abortion and tribal casino proposals shaping the agenda. The Kickapoo and Sac and Fox tribes seek a Wyandotte County hotel casino worth about $210 million, offering the state at least $50 million annually if cap limits and geographic restrictions hold.
